찰스 대븐포트

찰스 대븐포트(1866~1944)는 미국의 생물학자이자 우생학자로 카네기 유전학부장, 우생학 기록 연구소 소장을 역임하였다. 우생학에 대한 그의 연구는 사실상 나치 독일의 홀로코스트 정책에 많은 영향을 주게 되었다.

일대기

대븐포트는 코네티컷 주에 있는 스탠포드에서 태어났다. 하버드대학교를 졸업해 1892년 생물학 박사학위를 취득했다. 그 후, 하버드대학교에서 동물학 교수로 가르치면서, 저명한 과학자로서 활동하였다. 그는 분류학에 대한 정량적인 분류체계를 새롭게 만들었다. 그리고 그 체계를 이용해 생물측정학적으로 다윈의 진화론을 증명하고자 하였다. 하지만 실패하였고, 새롭게 멘델의 유전법칙이 재발견되면서 그의 연구방향은 유전학으로 옮겨가게 되어 멘델주의의 강력한 지지자가 된다.
1898년, 대븐포트는 카네기 연구소의 소장으로 임명된다. 1910년에 그는 우생학 기록 연구소장을 맡으면서 미국에 있는 사람들의 유전학적 데이터베이스를 얻을 수 있게 되었다. 그렇게 되면서 인간의 형질유전에 관해 더 자세하게 연구하게 될 수 있었다. 1911년, ‘형질유전과 우생학의 관계’는 한동안 대학교에서 유전학 교재로 쓰일 정도로 많은 신뢰를 받게 되어 미국 과학 한림원에 채택되기까지 하였다.
이후 대븐포트는 국제 우생학 연방기구(IFEO)를 설립해서 미국뿐만 아니라 전 세계적인 사람들의 유전정보를 손에 넣을 수 있었다. 이종족 간의 결혼, 지역마다의 사생아 발생확률, 등을 토대로 인종에 따른 세계지도를 그릴 수 있게 되었다. 1929년에 쓴 '자메이카에서의 인종혼혈' 논문 에서는 자메이카에서 일어나는 이종족간 결혼을 조사한 결과, 피부색의 유전이 두 쌍의 유전누적적인 효과에 의해 나타난다는 것을 증명했고, 이어서 눈의 색깔, 머리색, 조현증은 물론, 추상적인 사람의 성격, 개성까지도 유전적으로 설명하고자 하였다.
현재 그가 하는 연구는 인종차별주의로 부정되었지만, 그 당시만 하더라도 많은 민족주의자, 보수적인 계급주의자들 보호하에 그의 연구는 지속될 수 있었다. 실제로 그는 아돌프 히틀러가 나치독일의 정권을 잡았을 때, 지속적으로 나치 관계자들과 연락을 취해 대븐포트의 사설이 독일의 언론에 퍼지도록 도움을 받았다. 이런 것이 가능했던 이유는 그가 연구하는 우생학이 나치의 홀로코스트 정책을 과학적으로 뒷받침 할 수 있다고 생각해서이다. 하지만, 그것은 우생학이 비과학적인 방법에 의해 변질되었고, 단지 표면적으로만 유태인들을 학살하는데 증거를 대기 위한 방법에 불과했다. 그는 1944년 폐렴으로 사망했다.
