BSD 허가서
BSD 허가서(BSD licenses)는 자유 소프트웨어 저작권의 한 가지이다. BSD 계열 소프트웨어를 포함한 많은 프로그램에서 사용한다.
BSD(Berkeley Software Distribution) 라이선스는 소프트웨어 라이선스라고도 할 수 없을 만큼 미약하여, 해당 소프트웨어는 아무나 개작할 수 있고, 수정한 것을 제한 없이 배포할 수 있다. 다만 수정본의 재배포는 의무적인 사항이 아니므로 BSD 라이선스를 갖는 프로그램은 공개하지 않아도 되는 상용 소프트웨어에서도 사용할 수 있다.
이것이 GNU GPL과의 가장 큰 차이점인데, GPL은 파생된 소프트웨어도 GPL과 같은 라이선스를 갖도록 의무화하고 있다. 즉 파생물의 경우에도 소스 코드가 반드시 배포되도록 하는 것인데, 이것은 GPL을 만들어낸 리처드 스톨먼의 의지에 따른 결과이다. BSD 라이선스의 경우에는 BSD 자체가 공공기관에서 만들어낸 것이므로 공공의 몫으로 돌려주자는 의미가 강하므로 라이선스 자체에는 아무런 제한 없이 누구나 자신의 용도로 사용할 수 있도록 한 것이고, GPL의 경우에는 자유 소프트웨어의 철학을 실천하고자 하는 의도가 반영되어 있다고 할 수 있다.
한편 BSD 라이선스는 라이선스 자체에는 소프트웨어에 국한되지 않고 하드웨어 등에서도 아무런 제약 없이 누구나 자신의 용도로 사용할 수 있도록 하는 대신 사용자의 사용으로 인해 발생하는 모든 발생가능한 경우의 리스크와 손해에 대해 사전인식가능 여부와 상관없이 사용자 본인에게 책임지고 있다는 점도 이 라이선스의 주요한 부분을 차지하고 있다.
