초기 시절 편집

리브스는 미시간주 디트로이트의 굉장히 음악적인 가정에서 태어났다. 가수였던 그의 아버지는 그가 두 살때 돌아가셨다. 어머니는 바다 스완슨이라는 트럼펫 연주자였다. 또한 피아노와 키보드 연주자, 그리고 프로듀서로 유명한 조지 듀크가 그녀의 사촌이기도 하다. 다이앤과 그녀의 자매 샤론은 덴버에서 그들에 어머니의 손에 길러졌다. 다이앤이 어렸을 때 그녀는 피아노 레슨을 받았고, 기회가 있을 때마다 언제든 노래를 불렀다. 그녀가 11살일 때 만난 어떤 선생님은 음악이 학생들을 하나로 모으는 데 최고라는 믿음을 가지고 있었는데, 덕분에 다이앤은 음악에 대해 더 많은 관심을 가지게 되었다. 다이앤은 음악에 대한 자신의 사랑과, 가수가 되고 싶다는 꿈을 발견했다.

16살때 리브스는 덴버의 조지 워싱턴 고등학교의 빅밴드에서 노래를 부르게 되었다. 그 해에 리브스의 밴드는 한 음악 페스티벌(전국 재즈 교육자들 모임)에서 연주하게 되었다. 그녀의 밴드는 우승을 차지했고, 리브스는 그자리에서 자신의 맨토가 될 트럼펫 연주자 클락 테리를 만나게 된다.

일 년후, 리브스는 1976년 LA로 이사가기 전까지 콜로라도 대학에서 음악을 공부하게 된다. 거기에서 그녀는 라틴 음악에 대한 관심을 가지기 시작했다. 여러 타입의 보컬들을 실험해본 뒤 그녀는 가수의 길을 걷기로 마음을 굳힌다. 그녀는 에두아르도 델 바리오를 만났고, 그의 그룹 칼데라와 투어를 떠나 나이트 플라이트의 빌리 차일즈를 부르기도 했다. 후에 그녀는 세르히오 멘데즈와 투어를 가기도 한다.

1983년에서 1986년 사이 리브스는 해리 벨라폰테의 리드 싱어로 투어를 했다. 이 시기에 그녀는 처음으로 월드 뮤직을 경험하게 된다.
