창조과학에 대한 반론

(진화에 대한 논란에서 넘어옴)

진화는 기존 종교적, 인간 중심적 가치관이 자리잡던 사회에 처음 찰스 다윈의 《종의 기원》에 의해 발표된 과학이론이며, 이를 제대로 이해 못하거나, 기존 창조론자들 및 신자들로부터 박해를 받았다. 또한 진화론의 이론적 어려움, 진화를 확인하는 데 필요한 매우 긴 시간으로 인하여 대중들이 진화론을 제대로 이해하는 데에 어려움을 겪었고, 이로 인해 진화에 대한 많은 잘못된 지식이 자리잡게 되었다. 창조설 주장자들은 이런 잘못된 인식들을 이용하여 창조과학 또는 지적설계론이라는 이름의 유사과학을 만들어 이를 초-중-고등학교의 정규 과학 과목에 편입시키려는 시도를 계속하고 있고, 이에 대한 반론을 본 문서에서 서술한다.

찰스 다윈의 《종의 기원》 출간 이후로, 중세 유럽의 사회적, 철학적, 신학적 토대가 되었던 기독교의 창조론과 극심한 갈등을 일으키게 됨으로써, 최초의 진화론과 창조론의 갈등이 비화되었다. 당대에는 대부분의 공공교육기관을 종교재단에서 소유하고 있었기에 대부분의 논쟁은 주로 지식인 간의 학술적 토론에 가까웠다.

19세기부터 진화론은 과학계의 중요한 핵심이론으로 자리잡으면서 정교분리의 세속주의인본주의, 무신론주의, 회의주의와 함께 받아들여졌다. 그로 인하여 각 세속국가의 정부들은 공공교육의 하나로서 생물학에서 진화론을 가르치게 되었고, 이를 통해 진화론은 과학 이론의 하나로서 대중에게 확산되었다. 이에 반발하여 일부 종교계는 진화론이 대중에게 확산되는 것을 막고 창조론을 널리 전파하기 위해 창조론을 공공교육과정에서 가르칠 것을 주장하며 투쟁하고 있다. 이 과정에서 진화에 대한 논란 또한 대중에게 크게 확산되었다. 이러한 과정에는 진화가 짧은 시간에 관찰되기 힘들고, 그 과정을 이해하기 복잡하여 이를 이해하기 위해서 일정 수준의 교육 과정이 필요하다는 점이 함께 작용하였다.

결국 이런 논란은 법정으로까지 확산되었다. 대표적인 사례는 1987년 미국 연방 대법원의 판결로 창조론을 포함한 창조과학을 공립학교에서 가르치는 것은 정교분리원칙에 어긋난다는 판결이 있다.[1]. 이에 종교계는 필립 존슨 교수의 《심판대의 다윈》을 시작으로 창조론에서 변형된 이론인 지적설계이론을 개진하였다.

2004년 10월 18일, 도버 교육 위원회가 6대 3의 표결로 다음과 같은 진술을 생물학 교과 과정에 더해 넣기로 결정했다. “학생들은 다윈의 진화론에 공백 또는 문제가 있으며, 지적 설계론을 비롯한-그러나 지적 설계론만으로 국한되지 않는-다른 진화 이론들이 있음을 알게 될 것이다.” 그 다음 달, 위원회는 더욱 상세한 내용을 추가했다. 이후 학교는 <판다와 인간>을 구입하여 학생들에게 배부하였다. 2004년 12월 14일, ACLU가 학군을 상대로 소송을 제기했다. 2005년 9월 26일부터 11월 4일까지 재판이 열렸으며, 법관은 보수 기독교 신자 판사인 존 E. 존스 3세였다. 재판 과정에서 <판다와 인간>의 원제가 <창조생물학>이었고, <생물학과 창조>로 바뀌었다가, 이후 1990년대에 시작된 지적 설계론 운동으로 제목이 바뀌었음이 드러났다. 원고 측은 학교에 보낸 책들을 구입한 윌리엄 버킹엄의 진술을 강조함으로써 종지부를 찍었다. “2,000년 전에 십자가 위에서 돌아가신 분이 있습니다. 누군가 그분 입장을 대변해 줘야 하지 않겠습니까?” 결국 2005년 12월 20일, 존스 판사는 지적 설계론과 종교적 편협함에 대해 강경한 어조로 비난했다.

최근에는 대한민국에서도 다양한 개신교 단체가 창조론을 공공교육기관에서 가르쳐야 한다고 주장하여,[2] 교육계 및 과학계와 갈등을 빚게 되었다.[3]

진화에 대한 오해는 주로 창조과학회와 지적설계론자 같은 유사과학자들이 빚어내며 그중 일부가 매스컴을 타고 대중에게 널리 퍼지게 되었으며, 과학계는 이를 반박하였다.

현재(2009년) 한국에서 종교별로 불교 68%, 로마 가톨릭교회 83%, 개신교 39.6%의 신자들이 진화를 지지하는 것으로 조사되었다[4].

진화에 관한 오해들 편집

근본주의적 시각에서 가지는 진화에 대한 오해는 너무나 많지만, 그중 대표적인 것 몇가지만을 정리하자면 다음과 같은 것이 있다. 오해가 아닌 것은 (O), 사실에 기반한 것은 (*), 단순히 용어를 이해하지 못한 것은 (△), 전제부터 틀린 것은 (X)로 표시한다.

  • 주장 1) 진화는 이론일 뿐이다. 그러므로 가설이나 다름없다. (X)

과학에서 이론이 갖는 의미와 일상에서 사용하는 이론적이라는 단어를 섞어쓸 경우 나타나는 문제점으로, 과학에서의 이론법칙은 거의 비슷한 신뢰도가 있으며 그 중 수식으로 표현되는 것을 법칙, 포괄성이 있는 넓은 범주의 지식을 이론이라 칭하는 것이다. 가설이 검증되고, 수십만번의 검증과정을 거치고 포괄성을 지녀야만 이론이 된다. 즉 이 주장은 잘못된 단어들을 조합한 것에 불과하다.

  • 주장 2) 진화는 모든 것이 우연히 이루어졌다는 의미이다. (△)

진화의 과정에 필요한 "우연"이라는 단어는 역시 과학의 용어인 "무작위성"을 두고 하는 말인 경우가 많으며, 이는 일상에서 사용하는 우연의 의미와는 다르다. 진화는 메커니즘이 있고, 각각의 메커니즘이 관찰되었으며, 실제 진화 현상 자체도 관찰 가능한 자연현상이다. 즉, 이 질문은 진화와 과학주의의 일부를 혼동해서 나타나는 질문에 불과하다. 해당 주장을 하는 사람들 중 지적설계론을 주장하는 경우가 있는데, 이는 과학으로서 중립적인 진화에 대한 기본적인 이해 결여에서 나타나는 경우가 많다.

  • 주장 3) 진화의 확률은 낮다. 그러므로 일어날 수 없다. (△)

진화의 확률은 그냥 계산할 수 있는 것이 아니다. 단백질을 이루는 아미노산들의 종류나 이를 코딩하는 코돈의 수를 곱해서 구하는 계산은 사실 진화의 확률이 아니라 길가다가 단백질을 하나 발견했는데 그게 저 단백질이었을 확률이다. 진화의 확률을 계산하기 위해서는 모델이 필요한데, 이는 멀티버스를 기반으로 한 쿤닌의 계산법과 같은 방식들이 존재하며, 그 모델 안에서 의미가 있는 것이다. 그 계산법에서 사용한 "현재의 방식"대로 진화되었을 확률을 구하는 것은 그만큼 많은 종류의 우주를 가정했기에 가능한 것으로, 같은 방식으로 한 사람의 출생과 성장, 사망에도 아주 낮은 확률이 필요하게 된다. 심지어는 확률이 낮다고 해도 일어나지 못하는 것을 의미하는 것이 아닌 것이다. 즉, 이 질문은 수학에 대한 기본적 이해가 부족해서 나타나는 질문이라고 볼 수 있다.

  • 주장 4) 진화는 적자생존과 약육강식을 기반으로 하며, 이는 약자와 강자의 구분을 확실하게 한다. (*△)

적자생존진화에 큰 영향을 주는 원리이지만, 이는 적자가 생존한다는 의미가 아니라 생존한 자가 적자라는 의미이다. 진화와 약육강식은 아무런 관련이 없으며, 약육강식은 먹이사슬에서 언급되기는 하나 그마저도 잘 사용되지 않는 고전적 단어이다. 앞에서 설명했듯 적자생존은 "생존"과 "번식"을 성공한 자가 "적자"가 되는 것을 의미하기에 진화는 약자와 강자의 구분을 확실하게 하지 않는다.
