고리오 영감

《고리오 영감》(프랑스어: Le Père Goriot ; 1834년 ~ 1835년)는 발자크의 장편소설이다. 그의 모든 소설 사이에는 작중인물이 서로 유기적인 연관성을 가지며 이 때문에 《인간 희극》은 하나의 완전한 사회 형태를 만들고 있다. 이 연관성을 설정한 최초의 작품이 《고리오 영감》이다. 제목이 가리키는 내용으로는 두 딸에게 모든 것을 희생한 끝에 딸들에게 버림을 받아 미치게 죽은 어느 노상인의 불행이 주제인 것처럼 보이지만 오히려 이것은 시골 출신의 가난한 청년 라스치냐크가 청운의 뜻을 품고 파리에서 쓰라린 면학의 길을 걷는 가운데 어쩔 수 없이 '사회라고 하는 커다란 책자'를 읽게 되어 인생의 실상에 눈을 떠 사회에 도전하게 된다는 과정을 주제로 인정해야 한다. 요컨대, 이것은 근대사회의 상징인 파리의 영화와 악덕의 두루마리 그림이지만 라스치냐크를 유혹하는 보트랑이란 무법자의 웅변에서 사회의 모순에 대한 통렬한 풍자가 노출되어 있다.
