초승달가슴새류(crescentchests)는 남아메리카에서 발견되는 초승달가슴새속(Melanopareia)에 속하는 조류의 총칭이다. 이전에는 이 속을 꼬리세움새과로 분류했다. 이 분류학적 위치에 의문이 제기되었고, 남아메리카 분류 위원회에 의해 2007년부터 초승달가슴새과(Melanopareiidae)라는 별도의 과로 독립시켜 분류하고 있다.^[1] 이어 이 과는 국제조류학회(IOC: International Ornithological Congress) 조류 목록과 클레멘츠 체크리스트에서 인정되었다.^[2]^[3]^[4]

초승달가슴새의 몸길이는 14–16 cm, 몸무게는16-23g 정도이며, 꼬리세움새류보다 꼬리가 비교적 길다. 초승달가슴새라는 이름처럼, 가슴을 가로질러 나 있는 독특한 띠 형태의 깃털이 두드러진 특징이다.^[5]
