이악어목 어류는 모두 해수어로, 심해에 사는 종류가 많다. 전 세계의 온대 및 열대 지역의 외양에 넓게 분포한다. 많게는 해저로부터 떨어져 사는 중층 유영성 어류로, [[점매가리과]] 등 일부만이 대륙사면에도 분포하는 저서어류이다.
대표어종인 [[붉평치]]는 [[다랑어속|다랑어]] 주낙 낚시줄에, 또 [[꼬리투라치]]는 가끔 연안 정치망에 의해 어획되어<ref name=Kaisuigyo1997/>, 식용으로 여겨지는 일도 있지만, 수산업에서의 중요성은 낮다. 나머지 종류의 상당수는 지극히 드물게 밖에 포획되지 않고<ref name=Kaisuigyo1997>『日本の海水魚』 p.120</ref><ref name=Matsuura2007>『海の動物百科3 魚類II』 p.127</ref>, 이용되는 일도 거의 없다.
