==초기 생애==

퍼싱은 부유한 가정의 자녀, 조숙한 학생들을 위해 마련된 라클리드에 있는 학교에 입학을 했다. 1878년에 고등학교를 졸업하고, 현지의 흑인 아동들을 위한 교사가 되었다.
