[[찰스 다윈]]의 <[[종의 기원]]> 출간 이후로, 중세 유럽의 사회적, 철학적, 신학적 토대가 되었던 [[기독교]]의 [[창조설]]과 극심한 갈등을 일으키게 됨으로써, 최초의 [[진화론]]과 [[창조설]]의 갈등이 비화되었다. 당대에는 대부분의 공공교육기관을 종교재단에서 소유하고 있었기에, 대부분의 논쟁은 주로 지식인 간의 학술적 토론에 가까웠다.
 
19세기부터 [[진화론]]은 과학계의 중요한 핵심이론으로 자리잡으면서 정교분리의 [[세속주의]]와 [[인본주의]], [[무신론]]주의, [[회의주의]]와 함께 받아들여졌다. 그로 인하여 각 [[세속국가]]의 정부들은 공공교육의 하나로서 생물학에서 진화론을 가르치게 되었고 이를 통해 진화론은 과학 이론의 하나로서 대중에게 확산되었다. 이에 반발하여 일부 종교계는 진화론이 대중에게 확산되는 것을 막고 창조론을 널리 전파하기 위해 창조설을 공공교육과정에서 가르칠 것을 주장하며 투쟁하고 있다. 이 과정에서 진화에 대한 논란 또한 대중에게 크게 확산되었다. 이러한 과정에는 진화가 짧은 시간에 관찰되기 힘들고, 그 과정을 이해하기 복잡하여 이를 이해하기 위해서 일정 수준의 교육 과정이 필요하다는 점이 함께 작용하였다.
