[[알렉산드로스 3세]]의 [[페르시아]] 원정에 대한 기록과 [[고대 로마]]시대에서 검은 빵 사이에 고기를 끼워먹었단 기록 등 빵 사이에 재료를 넣는 요리는 오래전부터 내려오고 있는 것으로 보이나 오늘날 같은 형태의 샌드위치가 개발 된 것은 18세기 영국에서 비롯되었다.
