Heyns' academic career started in 1966 when he was appointed as [[강사|lecturer]] in [[교조주의|dogmatic]] subjects at the [[스텔렌보스 대학교|University of Stellenbosch]]. In 1971 he succeeded A.B. Du Preez as [[교수|professor]] at the [[프리토리아 대학교|University of Pretoria]] where he stayed until his retirement at the end of 1993.
