오클라호마 주의 거의 중앙부, [[아칸소 강]]의 지류인 [[오클라호마 강]](노스캐나디언 강) 연안에 위치한다. [[1887년]] 철도 통과지점으로 건설되었고, 이후 부근의 농지를 분양하면서 본래 [[인디언]]의 거주지였던 이곳에 [[백인]]들이 몰려들었다. 백인들이 들어오면서 인구가 급증하여 곧 시로 승격되었고, [[1910년]] 주도가 되면서 더욱 발전하였다. [[1928년]], 부근에서 [[석유]]가 발견되면서 이 도시의 성장은 더욱 가속화되어 미국 중남부의 대표적인 도시가 되었다. 석유 관련 산업과 함께 항공 관련 산업도 발달되어 있다. 오클라호마 주 최대의 도시로 도시권 인구는 100만이 넘으며, 주의 경제, 문화, 행정의 중심지이다. 오클라호마시티를 연고로 하는 프로스포츠팀으로 NBA 농구의 [[오클라호마시티 선더]] 가 있다.
[[1995년]] [[4월 19일]], 이 도시의 중심가에 미국 역사상 최악의 [[오클라호마시티 폭탄 테러|폭탄 테러]]가 발생하여, 168명이 사망하는 일이 일어났었다. 테러 사건 현장에는 추모비가 세워져 있다.
