멤피스는 미시시피 강둑으로부터 솟아오른 꽤 큰 절벽을 차지하고 있어서, 그 지역은 자연적으로 정주하기에 좋은 위치이다.

멤피스는 뚜렷한 네 계절을 가지고 있다. 여름(5월 말~9월 말)의 온도는 20 °C (68 °F) ~ 35 °C (95 °F)이며 습한 편이다. 뚜렷하다는 말은 무리가 있다. 여름이라고 느껴지기 시작하는 날씨는 4월 말부터 시작되며, 보통은 10월 말까지도 덥다. 비교적 습하고 더운 날씨이며, 여름이 무척 길고 겨울이 짧다. 눈은 겨울에 한차례 정도 오기도 하고 안 오는 해도 있다. [[2008년 3월]]에는 이례적인 [[폭설]]이 내리기도 했다.
