[[야르칸드]]의 남동쪽에 위치한 도시는 위구르인이 거주하며 중소의 농업 중심이다. 역사적인 남쪽 비단길에 위치하는 허톈은 두 강력한 강에 의존하였다. [[카라카슈 강]]과 [[유룽카슈 강]]이 그것인데 광대한 [[타클라마칸 사막]]의 남서 가장자리에서 생존하기 위해 필요한 물을 제공하였다. 유룽카슈슈 강은 아직도 도시와 오아시스를 위해 물과 관개를 제공한다.
