그리스어 포르노그래포스(pornographos), 즉 ‘창녀에‘매춘부에 관해 쓰여진 것’이라는 의미를 가진 단어에서 유래된 단어이다.
이 낱말은 [[창녀매춘부]]를 뜻하는 '포르네({{llang|el|πόρνη }})'<ref> [http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/resolveform?type=start&lookup=porn&lang=greek List of Greek words starting with πορν- (''porn-'')], on Perseus </ref>, 쓰거나 기록하다라는 뜻의 '그라포({{llang|el|γράφω}})', 그리고 어떤 상태나 장소를 나타내는 어미 '-이아({{llang|el|-ία}})'가 붙어서 나온 현대의 [[그리스어]] 낱말 포르노그라피아(πορνογραφία)와 매우 비슷하다. 그러나 그리스에서 이 용어가 언제 처음부터 사용되었는지는 알려져 있지 않다.
