[[목사]]의 아들로 태어났으며, 현재의 오슬로 대학인 크리스티아니아 대학에서 학업을 마쳤다. 1872년에는 크리스티아니아 대학교의 교수가 되었으며, 1886년에는 [[펠릭스 클라인]]의 후임으로 라이프치히 대학 교수로 부임했다. 그러나 우울증과 향수에 시달렸으며, 1898년 고향으로 귀향, 이듬해 56세의 나이에 비타민B12 흡수기능이 저하되어 생기는 악성 [[괴혈병]]으로 사망했다.
