[[글래스고 대학교]],  [[프린스턴 신학교]], [[에든버러 대학교]]에서 공부했다. 그는 [[스코틀랜드]] 출신의 [[칼뱅주의]] 신학자로서 [[프린스턴 신학교]]에서 가르치다가 1929년 [[웨스트민스터 신학교]]로 분열되면서 오랫동안 [[조직신학]]을 가르쳤다. [[존 그레섬 메이천]]과 [[게할더스 보스]] 밑에서 공부하였다. 국내에는 <존 머레이 조직신학>(크리스찬다이제스트 역간), <존 머레이 구속>(복있는 사람 역간), <칼빈의 성경관과 주권사상>(CLC 역간) 등의 저서를 통해 알려진 바 있고, <로마서 주석>은 존 머리의 대표작이다. 

[[제1차 세계 대전]]에 [[영국군]]으로 참전하였다가 한쪽 눈을 실명하였다.
