민주당은 지금까지 총 15명의 대통령을 배출했다. 첫째는 1829년에 당선된 7대 대통령 앤드루 잭슨이고, 2020년 기준 민주당이 배출한 마지막 대통령은 버락 오바마 대통령이다. [[2009년]] [[1월 21일]] 당시 [[버락 오바마]] [[미국의 대통령|대통령]](행정부)의 지도 아래 [[미국 상원|상원]]에서 최소 58석, [[미국 하원|하원]] 257석으로 입법부에서 다수당([[2007년]] 당시 기준)을 차지하고 있었으며, 주지사도 28곳으로 모두 과반 이상을 점하고 있었으나, [[2010년]] 중간 선거에서 여당 사상 최악으로 참패하여 주지사는 20명, 상원 의석은 53명, 하원 의석은 193명으로 줄었다. 2020년 현재 상원 의석은 45명(원내에서는 무소속 2명과의 연합으로 47석) 하원 의석은 232석이며 당의 상징은 [[당나귀]]이다. 또한 연방 대법원의 판사들 9명 중 4명이 민주당 소속 인사이다.
