그레일 마커스(Greil Marcus)는 미국의 작가, 음악 평론가이자 문화 평론가이다. 록 음악을 문화와 정치 등 더욱 넓은 틀과 엮어내는 학술 및 문학 작품을 쓰는 것으로 널리 알려져 있다.

생애

마커스는 캘리포니아주 샌프란시스코에서 그레일 거슬리와 엘레노어 거슬리의 외아들로 태어났다.^[1] 해군 장교였던 마커스의 아버지는 1944년 12월 필리핀 태풍이 거슬리가 부사령관으로 근무하던 USS 헐을 침몰시켰을 때 사망했다. 윌리엄 홀시 주니어가 제3함대에 태풍 코브라로 항해할 것을 명령했음에도 거슬리는 미 해군 역사상 반란은 한 번도 없었고 "누군가는 죽어야 했다"고 주장하며 명령을 불복종하는 것을 거부했다.^[1]

마커스는 롤링 스톤, 크림, 빌리지 보이스, 아트포럼, 피치포크를 포함한 록 비평가이자 칼럼니스트로 활동했다. 1983년부터 1989년까지는 전미 도서 비평가 협회의 이사를 역임했다.^[2]
