목화속
목화속 또는 고시피움(Gossypium)은 목화의 속이다. 목화속은 50개 정도의 종들로 이루어져 있으며[1] 새로운 종들이 계속해서 발견되고 있다.[1] 고시피움이라는 속 이름은 부드러운 물질을 가리키는 아랍어 낱말 goz에서 비롯한다.[2]
목화속의 기원은 50만~100만 년 전으로 거슬러 올라간다.[3]
