아리아인

아리아인(영어: Aryan, 산스크리트어: आर्यावर्त, 페르시아어: اریایی)은 인도이란계 민족들이 사용한 자기지칭어이다.[1][2] 인도에서 아리아인이라는 용어는 고대 인도 베다 시대의 인도아리아인들이 자신들 그리고 인도아리아 문화가 기반을 두었던, 아리아바르타라는 지역에 종교적 연관성을 위해 사용되었다.[3][4] 이란계 민족들은 아베스타 경전에서 자신들을 나타내는 민족적 표시로 사용했고, 이 용어는 나라 이름 "이란"에 대한 어원학적 근원을 형성했다.[5][6][7][8]

아리아인의 어근 *h₄erós ("외부인과 반대되는, 어떤 집단의 구성원"을 뜻함)이 인도유럽조어 (PIE)에서 기원을 한 것으로 보이나, 자기지칭어로써, "아리아"라는 용어의 사용이 인도이란인들에게서만 확인되었고 인도유럽조어 화자들인 원시 인도유럽인들이 자신들을 집단으로서 지칭하는 용어가 있었는지 여부는 정확히 알 수 없다.[9][10] 학자들은 심지어 고대 시대조차도, "아리아인"이라는 개념이 인종적인 것이 아니라, 종교적, 문화적, 언어적이었음을 강조한다.[11][12][13]

19세기 서구 학자들로 인해 리그베다의 오역된 참조문을 근거로 하여, "아리아인"이라는 용어는 아르튀르 드 고비노의 저서를 통해 인종적 분류로 적용되었으며, 고비노의 인종적 이념은 금발의 북유럽 "아리아인"들이 토착민들과 인종적 결합으로 인종적 혈통이 희석되기 전에, 전 세계로 이주하여 모든 주요 문명들을 세웠다라는 사상을 기반으로 하였다.

휴스턴 스튜어트 체임벌린의 저서를 통해, 고비노의 사상은 "아리아 민족"이 다른 인종 집단들 보다 선천적으로 우월하다고 보았던 나치의 인종적 이데올로기에 영향을 미쳤다.[14] 이 인종적 이데올로기의 이름으로 행한 잔혹한 행위들은 "아리아인"이라는 용어를 학술적으로 사용하기를 꺼리게 했고, 일부에선 "인도이란인"으로 대체되기도 하였다.[15]

어원 편집

아리아인의 아리아(Arya)는 18세기에 산스크리트어 ā́rya,[10] आर्य[16][17][18]에서 유래했고 모든 인도이란인들이 사용한 자기지칭어라고 생각되었다.[19][20]
