Mentor dashboard coming soon to your wiki

Starting tomorrow (December 7), you will have access to Special:MentorDashboard.

This special page will list the newcomers who are assigned to you so that you can check if they do some edits or if the need help. This tool is still a work in progress. Some bugs may appear, please let me know if you find something strange.

Also, a new filter will be available for mentors. Mentors can monitor their mentees' activity in Watchlist and RecentChanges, so they can help support their mentees' work. For privacy reasons, this filter can't be accessed by someone else than the mentor itself. This filter only filters mentees assigned to the mentor. This filter is not visible for people who are not listed as mentors

In the future, we will add more functions to this Mentor page.

One of the goals of the Growth features is to create a connexion between newcomers and experienced users. This way, you can help promising newcomers to become more active users, but you can also discourage spammers to edit. :) As a consequence, it is important to have active mentors. We encourage your community to check if mentors are currently active. If they are not active, please consider to remove them from the list.

You have access to Special:MentorDashboard, to check on how the mentees assigned to you are going. Soon, we will provide anew module on this page. This new module will allow you to set yourself as away (for instance when you go on vacation), or to define the number of newcomers you want to take care of.

We have recently found some mentor descriptions that were not working. Please also check if the descriptions on the mentor list exceed 240 characters, or if they include HTML, CSS or wikitext. If it is the case, please note that these descriptions won't work. This may not apply to your wiki.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please post them below (don't forget to ping me, please), or directly at the Growth team page (in any language). You can also subscribe to the Growth newsletter, or check on our FAQ.

An important update regarding the list of mentors

Hello

This is an important information about the list of mentors. Sorry to use English. 당신의 언어로 번역해 주세요.

Starting October 26, 2022, the list of mentors will be upgraded. The mentorship system will continue to work as it does now.

Why this change?

At the moment, the mentor list is a simple page anyone can edit, unless it’s protected.

We have observed some cases where mentors were not following the instructions, which generated some mistakes. The old syntax [[user:Name]]|Description is confusing and won't be used anymore.

Also, this new system will make the development of new features for mentors much easier.

What will change?

We will add a new special page to your wiki: Special:ManageMentors.

The page where mentors are currently listed will be edited. The list of mentors will be replaced by {{Special:ManageMentors}}, the rest of the page will not be changed.

If your wiki has a separate list of mentors for workshop mentors, this list will be converted as well.

What are the new features?

After the upgrade, new mentors will signup by visiting Special:MentorDashboard. At this page, mentors can change the number of mentees they take care of, mark themselves as away or quit.

The new system prevents users who made less than 500 edits and who created their account less than 30 days ago to become mentors. These values can be changed by the community on special:EditGrowthConfig.

Special:ManageMentors will list all mentors, and the last time they edited. It will look like a table (example). This special page can be transcluded to any page (example).

Mentors will edit their description and settings directly at Special:MentorDashboard. Administrators will be able to edit any mentor's description and settings at Special:ManageMentors, or remove a mentor from the list of mentors. This will reassign all newcomers the mentor has to other mentors.

What mentors have to do?

No action is needed regarding your inscription to the mentors list.

You will have to update the description of the list of mentors, to remove the old instructions and explain the new sign-up process to become a mentor.

When will it happen?

The deployment will happen starting October 26, after 13:00 UTC. The change will be made by Martin Urbanec (WMF).

How can we know more about it?

The project page, documentation and FAQ have been updated. These pages can be translated.

Number of edits to be a mentor

I noted a detail that might interest you regarding mentorship.

The information notice at 위키백과:새_사용자_경험/새_사용자_멘토 says (machine translation): "To become a mentor, you must have the right to vote in managerial elections (90 days after your first contribution and at least 1,000 general paper contributions)."

At the moment, the conditions defined at 특수:성장구성편집 show "90 days of presence" and "500 edits on any namespace".

안녕하세요, 새 사용자 멘토의 기준, 휴면 사용자 삭제에 대한 기준을 만들고 명시하기 위해 공동체의 의견도 구해볼겸 문단을 열게 되었습니다.

요즈음 멘토 명단에서도 보이시다시피, 작년 6월에 기여가 멈춰있는 분도 계시고 그외에 활발하지 않으신 분도 꽤 있으십니다. ZEM도 사라지고 활동 사용자도 최근 소폭 감소하는 지금, 무엇보다 새 사용자 육성이 위키백과의 미래에도 중요한것 같습니다만, 빠른 적응을 위한 새 사용자 멘토도 무엇보다 중요한 시기입니다.

따라서 새 사용자 멘토가 되기 위한 허들, 즉 전문성을 높이고, 활동적이시지 않은 분들도 명단에서 제거하는 것이 필요하다고 생각이 듭니다. 물론 명단에서도 삭제가 됩니다만, 기준이 모호하거나, 몇개월에 한번 가끔씩 기여하시는 경우는 쉽게 제거할 수 없다고 생각이 듭니다.

저는 다음과 같은 제안을 합니다.

• 멘토가 되기 위해서는 관리자 선거 피선거권 (첫 기여 후 90일 경과, 일반 문서 기여 1,000회 이상) -> 일반문서 기여 1000회와 사용자토론, 위키백과, 그외 토론 이름공간의 기여 합이 Xtool 기준 300회 이상이 있어야 합니다.

비활동 멘토 삭제에 대해서는 동의합니다. 다만 세부적인 기준에서, "토론 이름공간 기여 10회 이상 기여"는 필요성을 느끼지 못합니다. 위 1번 조건(관선 피선거권 충족+토론 이름 공간 기여 조건)을 만족하는 사용자이면 멘토의 자질이 있는 사용자라고 생각되며, 최근 토론이 없다고 그 사용자가 멘토가 되기 부합하지 않다고는 생각되지 않습니다. 사실 최근 30일 내 기여 횟수를 따지는 것이 맞는지도 모르겠습니다. 1번 조건을 만족하면 등록 기준에 만족하는 사용자이며, 이 4번 조건은 멘토의 부재 시 다른 멘토로의 할당을 위함이라고 보기 때문에 그 기여 수가 크게 중요하다고는 생각되지 않습니다.

예전에는 일반 사용자가 휴면 사용자를 제거할 수 있었지만 지금은 관리자만 멘토 목록에서 멘토를 제거할 수 있습니다. 저 json 문서를 직접 수정하는 건 관리자 뿐만 아니라 인터페이스 관리자도 가능합니다. 참고로 멘토로 등록하려면 지금은 가입 후 90일 이상이고 500회 이상의 편집을 한 사용자만 등록이 가능합니다. 이 조건 역시 따로 수정이 가능해 보이고요. 이 조건을 미달할 경우에는 아예 등록하는 특수 문서에서 막아버립니다.--na 2023년 1월 17일 (화) 18:41 (KST)

At the moment, on the technical side, it is not possible to add all the conditions you have defined on 특수:성장구성편집. The only possible conditions are 1/ a number of edits (with no details) and 2/ the age of the account. You can change the number of edits them for 1,000 edits for instance. Any user respecting that 1,000 edits condition set in 성장구성편집 would them be able to add themselves to the mentors list. It means that you have to check the list of mentors regularly, and manually remove mentors who are not aligned with the conditions. Hopefully, if you put the conditions to be a mentor at the top of 새 사용자 경험/새 사용자 멘토, most users will and follow them before applying. In my opinion, it is the best way to apply the conditions you defined: it requires to monitor the list of mentors, but it is also the simplest option, as it relies on users good faith.

If you prefer to have a technical solution, the Growth team can provide user right for mentors. This user right would be given:

• by admins, manually, to users who apply to be mentors.
  • This right would be given following the conditions you defined.
  • applying might reduce the number of people applying, as users will have to think twice before applying. It would remove hat collectors from the list, but it could also discourage good mentors who were not feeling 100% ready.
• by Growth features, automatically, to users who reach a certain number of conditions. But it is complicated.
  • It can't be done in the way you defined the conditions. We can create a right that targets users with more than 1,000 edits, but we can't target users with more than 1,000 edits in mainspace and 300 edits in discussions.
  • If you have some technical knowledge of Mediawiki, we use any of the wgAutopromote rights to build the conditions. The list of possibilities is limited, and changing it would require some more work on the technical side. I have no idea of the volume of work it would need, and how long it would take.
