별개의 테오프라스타과(Theophrastaceae D.Don)로 분류하기도 했다. 이 과는 7개 속, 95종의 나무 또는 관목으로 이루어져 있으며, 아메리카의 열대 지역에 자생한다.
APG II 분류 체계는 이 과를 국화군의 기저 그룹인 진달래목으로 분류한다. APG II 분류 체계는 약 15종의 추가 종과 함께 사몰루스속(Samolus)을 추가했으며, 넓은 지역에 분포한다.[2]
APG III 분류 체계는 이 과를 확장된 앵초과(넓은 의미) 안에 포함시키고 있다.[3]
