메디나에 있는 이슬람 최고의 성지 중 한 곳이며, 원래 [[무함마드]]가 메디나를 정복한 이 후 거주하기 위해 지은 자택이었다.

632년 그가 죽은 뒤 매장된 곳이며 성역화되어 이슬람 지도자인 아부 바크르와 우마르에 의해 확장, 모스크로 개조되었다.

그 후 아바스 조, 맘루크 왕조가 모두 대대적으로 개축 하였고 오스만 조에 이르러서도 계속 증축되어 무함마드의 영묘에 초록색 돔이 입혀지기도 하였다.

현재에도 사우디 정부가 특별히 공을 들여서 관리하고 있으며 매년 수백만명의 참배객들이 방문하고 있다.
