1605년, 갈릴레이는 [[코시모 2세]]의 수학 교사로 채용되었다. 1609년, 코시모는 [[토스카나 주|토스카나]]의 코시모 공작 2세가 된다. 갈릴레이는 예전 학생 시절처럼 부유한 가정에서의 후원을 바라고, 목성의 위성들을 발견한 것을 사용했다.<ref name=Galileo89/> 1610년 2월 13일에 갈릴레이는 공작의 비서에게 다음과 같은 편지를 쓴다
