이 폴리테이너는 미국의 정치학자 슐츠(David Schultz)가 1999년에 발표한 논문〈벤투라와 새로운 세계의 용감한 폴리테이너 정치학 Jesse Ventura and the Brave New World of Politainer Politics〉에서 처음 사용한 신조어이다.
폴리테이너(polititainer)라는 뜻은 정치인(politician)과 연예인(entertainer)의 합성어이다.
이와 같이 체육인 출신 정치인은 정치인(politician)과 선수(player)의 합성어로서 폴리레이어(poliplayer)라고 할수 있다.
