[[프랜시스 스콧 키]]의 시는 그 후 《[[맥헨리 요새|맥헨리 요새의 방어]]》(''The Defense of Fort McHenry'')'라는 제목으로 처음 출판되었고 그 해에 이 노래가 낱장 악보로 다시 출판되면서 제목도 바뀌었다.

이 곡은 [[1889년]]에 해군으로부터 인정 받았고, [[1916년]]에 [[백악관]]으로부터 인정 받았으며, [[1931년]] 당시 미국의 대통령이었던 [[허버트 후버|후버]]의 요청으로 공식 국가로 인정되었다.

 

 

미국 해군 출신인 [[존 필립 수자]]라는 사람이 같은 뜻의 노래를 행진곡으로 바꾼 곡도 유명하다.
