'''신화''' (神話, Mythology)는 말 그대로 풀이하자면 한 나라 혹은 한 민족으로부터 전승되어 오는 예로부터 섬기는 신을 둘러싼 이야기를 뜻한다. 한국에서는 보통 이와 같이 예로부터 전해오는 이야기들을 [[전설]]이라고 일컫기도 하지만, 전설은 신화와 비교하여 볼 때 이야기의 주제가 서로 독립된 것이 보통이며 그리고 그 짜임새에 있어서 단편적인 경향이 있다. 이에 비해 신화는 신과 인간을 둘러싼 이야기들에 국한하여 일종의 신화 세계를 구성하는 것이 특징이라고 볼 수 있다. 사람들이 신화를 지어내게 된 동기는 아마 일상생활에서 경험한 어떤 초자연적인 힘이나 현상들을 어떤 대상, 다시 말해 인간의 모습을 한 '신'과 연관시켜 삶의 의미를 되새기는 과정에서 비롯되었다 여겨진다.

아테나는 그리스 신화에 나오는 지혜·전쟁·직물·요리·도기·문명의 여신이다. 로마 신화의 미네르바와 동일시된다. 제우스와 메티스 사이에서 태어난 딸로, 아르테미스, 헤스티아처럼 누구와도 결혼하지 않은 처녀이다. 올림포스의 12신의 두 번째 세대에 속한다. 투구, 갑옷, 창, 메두사의 머리가 달린 방패(아이기스), 올빼미, 뱀이 대표적 상징물이다.
