바쿠닌은 그의 저서 신과 국가에서(God and the State) 다음과 같이 말했다.

Christianity is precisely the religion par excellence, because it exhibits and manifests, to the fullest extent, the very nature and essence of every religious system, which is the impoverishment, enslavement, and annihilation of humanity for the benefit of divinity.
 
God being everything, the real world and man are nothing. God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation. They destroy their reason, the principal instrument of human emancipation, and reduce them to imbecility, the essential condition of their slavery.
