카메룬 서부, [[우리 강]] 하구에 위치한다. [[기니 만]] 연안의 대표적인 항구 도시이며, 수도 [[야운데]]에서 서쪽으로 약 210km 떨어져 있다. [[19세기]] [[독일]]의 식민지로 개발되었고, [[1901년]]부터 [[1906년]]까지 독일령 카메룬의 수도였다. 식민지 수도는 내륙 고지대의 [[부에아]]로 옮겨졌으나, 이 곳은 독일 식민지의 상업 중심지로 발전하였다. [[1919년]] 이후 [[프랑스]]가 이 곳을 차지하였다. 독립 후 인구가 급증, 아프리카 중부의 대표적인 대도시가 되었고 각종 공업이 발달하였으나 인구 급증에 따른 사회 문제도 심각하다. 최근 인근 바다에서 [[석유]]와 [[천연가스]]가 개발되어 석유 관련 공업이 발달하고 있다.
