2,500년 전 [[예멘]]과 [[이집트]], [[지중해]] 지역을 연결하는 [[향신료]] 중계 무역항 역할을 맡았다. [[제1차 세계 대전]] 때에는 [[오스만 제국]]과 아랍-영국 연합군 사이에 전투가 벌어졌다. 1975년까지만 해도 작은 마을로 남아 있었지만 사우디아라비아 정부가 이 곳을 [[주바일]]과 함께 석유 산업의 새로운 중심지 가운데 하나로 삼으면서 크게 발전하게 된다.
