오직 성경은 [[종교 개혁가]]들이 신학적 기둥으로 간주하는 [[다섯 솔라]] 가운데 하나이다. [[종교 개혁]]의 핵심원리로서 성경의 해석과 적용은 성경이외의 어떤것과도 동일한 권위를 가질수 없다는 것이다. [[마르틴 루터|루터]]는 "성경이 없는 교황보다 성경으로 무장된 평범한 성도들이 더 강하다"다고 말하였다. 종교개혁가들은 성경의 본문의 권위에 강조를 두었고, 로마 카톨릭 교회는 교회 전통과 성경에 함께 권위의 근거를 두었다. 오직 성경이 의미하는 것은 교회의 전통에 의해서 성경을 해석하는 것을 거절하는 것이다.
