[[1769년]]에 설립되었으며 [[1825년]]에 도시 지위를 부여받았다. 소노라 주의 주도인 [[에르모시요]]에서 남쪽으로 약 117km, [[미국]] 국경에서 남쪽으로 약 390km 정도 떨어진 곳에 위치한다. [[소노라 사막]] 지대에 위치하기 때문에 건조하고 더운 기후를 띤다. 길이가 117km에 달하는 해변이 있기 때문에 많은 관광객들이 몰린다.
