1960년대 말엽에 500마리가 넘는 듀공 무리가 [[동아프리카]]와 그 주위 도서 지역에서 발견된 적이 있었다. 그 당시에 비하여 현재 해당 지역에 잔존하는 듀공의 개체 수는 약 50마리 정도로 빙산의 일각에 지나지 않으며, 수가 극적으로 불어나지 않는다면 곧 해당 지역에서 절멸하게 될 우려도 제기되고 있다. 반면 [[홍해]]에는 특히나 많은 수의 듀공들이 살고 있으며 동·서부에 고루 분포해 있다. 1980년대에 실시된 개체 조사로 볼 때, 당시에는 약 4,000마리에 달하는 듀공 떼가 살았던 것으로 보인다.
