Historical and Descriptive The Legislature of 1902 directed the State Board of Educationto investigate the need of additional facilities for training teachersfor the public schools of New Jersey. In its annual report for 1903,the Board reported that, although the New Jersey State NormalSchool at Trenton was filled with students, the supply of trainedteachers was quite inadequate to the increasing demand and recom-mended that a normal school be established in the northern part ofthe State. In 1904 the Legislature appropriated $25,000 for thepurchase of a site. After inspecting many locations, the Boardfinally purchased a plot of twenty-five acres in the northern part ofMontclair, Essex county. A more beautiful or healthful site couldnot have been chosen. The grounds have an elevation of four hun-dred feet above sea level and command an uninterrupted view of alandscape of remarkable beauty.
