English: The so-called Elefantentor (Elephants' Gate) in Staaken, Berlin, here closed, was once part of the barrier and fences which stretched along the rail tracks between the actual Berlin Wall between East and West Staaken and the East German border crossing control station of Staaken. From the point in the Berlin Wall were the tracks left West Berlin's Staaken into East German Staaken the barriers turned inwards East Germany along the tracks up to the control station of East German Staaken. However, in the course of the then Neue Straße (now: Am alten Gaswerk), south of the tracks, and the Oberdorfer Steig, north of the tracks, there was a railway crossing passing the tracks and the adjacent barrier fences. The two huge sliding gates in the course of barrier fences along both sides of the tracks were nicknamed Elephants' Gate by the Staakeners. After the removal of most of the barriers after 1989 the Elephants' Gate remained, since it also functioned as railway gate at this level crossing. After 1996 the level crossing and the control station were removed. Today there is only a pedestrain underpass at this place.
