허셜 메달

허셜 메달(Herschel Medal)은 왕립천문학회(Royal Astronomical Society, RAS)에서 "관측 천체물리학에서 탁월한 탐색"을 한 공로로 수여하는 상이다. 젊은 과학자들이 수상 후보가 될 수 있도록 하나의 업적에 수여된다.[1] RAS의 초대 회장인 윌리엄 허셜의 이름을 따서 명명되었다. 이 메달은 1974년에 처음 수여되었다. 허셜 메달은 1974년부터 2004년까지 3년에 한 번수여되었는데, 2004년부터는 주기가 2년으로 단축되었다. 2012년부터는 매년 수여된다. 이 메달은 1977년과 1986년에 두 번 공유되었다. 총 25명(남성 23명, 여성 2명)에게 23회 수여되었으며, 대부분 영국 출신이다.
