힌두-게르만계의 음모

힌두-게르만계의 음모(힌디어: हिंदु-जर्मन षडयंत्र)는 1914년에서 1917년 사이 인도 민족주의 단체들이 제1차 세계 대전 기간 동안 인도 독립 혁명 운동과 망명 및 추방당한 민족주의자 모임인 미국의 가다르당이나 독일의 베를린 위원회를 결성하여 인도 제국에 대항하여 범인도 반란을 일으키러 했던 계획이다. 이 음모는 제1차 세계 대전 개전 당시부터 구상하여 독일 제국 외무청, 샌프란시스코 독일 영사관, 오스만 제국, 아일랜드 공화당 등 여러 세력의 지원을 받았다. 주요 계획 중 하나는 펀자브에서 싱가포르에 이르는 영국령 인도군 내에 혼란을 불어일으키고 범인도 반란을 일으킨다는 것이었다. 군 내 반란 음모는 영국의 인도 아대륙 통치를 물러뜨리는 것을 목표로 하여 1915년 2월 시작할 계획이었다. 이 2월 반란은 영국의 정보기관이 가다르당에 잠입하여 주요 인물을 체포하며 분쇄되었다. 반란을 일으킨 인도 내 소부대와 주둔군도 분쇄되었다.

그 외 힌두-게르만계 음모에 속한 여러 반란 음모로는 1915년 싱가포르 반란, 애니 래슨 사건, 주간타르-독일 계획, 독일의 카불 작전, 인도 내 콘노트 레인저 반란, 그 외에도 1916년 블랙톰 폭발 사고 같은 여러 소규모 작전 등이 있었다. 이 음모 중 일부엔 중동 전역에 파견된 영국령 인도군을 붕괴시키는 것도 포함되었다.

인도-독일 동맹 및 음모는 세계적인 영국 정보기관의 주요 타겟 중 하나였고 여러 음모 시도를 막는 데 성공했다. 미국 정보기관은 1917년 애니 래슨 사건 이후 음모와 관련된 주요 인사들을 체포했다. 이 음모는 인도 내 라호레 음모 사건 재판 및 미국 내에서 힌두-게르만계의 음모 재판을 이끌어 내며 당시 미국에서 제일 길고 '비싼 재판'으로 손꼽혔다.

제1차 세계 대전 시기 힌두-게르만계의 음모 사건들은 인도 독립 운동으로 향했다. 제1차 세계 대전이 끝날 무렵엔 독립 운동이 약해졌지만 그래도 인도 제국이 정책 개혁을 하게 되는 주요한 원인이 되었다. 제2차 세계 대전 시기에도 이와 비슷하게 독일 및 일본 점령하의 동남아시아에서 이러한 지원이 이어져 수바스 찬드라 보스 산하의 무장친위대 인도 의용군단 및 인도 국가군이, 이탈리아는 모함마드 이크발 세다이 산하의 아자드 힌두스탄 전투군단이 수립되었다.

배경

19세기 이후 인도에서 민족주의가 대두되면서 19세기 내내 인도 내에서 사회, 경제, 정치적 여러 변화가 일어났다. 1885년 창설된 인도 국민회의는 정치적 자유와 자치 확대 등을 내걸며 친영 통치 협조 단체를 목표로 세워졌다. 1890년대엔 여러 지하단체가 세워지며 민족주의 운동이 거세졌다. 특히 벵골과 펀자브에선 강력하고 급진적이며 폭력적으로 전개되었으며 마하라슈트라, 마드라스 등 남인도에선 세가 작았지만 주목할만한 운동이 일어났다. 벵골의 혁명가들은 거의 대게 '고전적인' 인도 혁명의 전형인 교육받은 도심 중산층 바드랄록 공동체 청년을 모집하였으며, 반대로 펀자브에선 시골의 민병대가 조직적으로 폭력적인 운동을 펼쳤다.
