배경

제2차 세계 대전의 후유증을 겪던 와중에도 체코슬로바키아 공산당은 비교적 국민들 가운데 우호적인 위치를 차지하고 있었다. 1920년대 이래 체코슬로바키아 내에서 강한 영향을 끼치는 정당이었으며, 전시에는 다른 정당들과 원활한 협력관계에 있었다. 또한소련에 대한 승인은 국민들의 진정한 변화에의 갈망에 부합했고 당원 수도 늘었다. 1946년 체코슬로바키아 총선에서 38%의 표를 얻었는데 이는 유럽의 공산당들이 자유선거에서 얻은 결과 중 가장 좋은 결과였다. 에드바르트 베네시 대통령 스스로는 공산주의자가 아니었지만 소련에 대해서는 우호적인 입장을 가지고 있었던 까닭에 고트발트에게 총리직에 맡을 것을 요청했다. 정부는 여전히 비공산 세력이 다수였지만 체코슬로바키아 공산당의 세력은 점점 커져갔다. 하지만 많은 국민들은 이에 우호적이지 않았기에 1948년 5월의 선거에서 패배할 것이란 예측이 있었다.

쿠데타

1947년에서 1948년의 겨울 중에 내각과 의회내에서 체코슬로바키아 공산당과 다른 정당들 간의 갈등은 커져갔다. 1948년 2월 초 공산당 소속 내무부 장관 바츨라프 노섹은 불법으로 경찰청 내에 남은 비공산 세력을 숙청함으로써 직권을 남용했는데 이로써 보안 기구는 공산당의 도구가 됐고 시민들의 자유를 위태로이 했다. 2월 12일 내각 내의 비공산 세력들은 이들에의 처벌을 요구했고 2월 21일 비공산 세력의 장관 열 두 명이 이에 항의하며 사임했다.

그 사이에 공산주의자들은 행동을 시작했다. 이들을 돕고자 소련 대사 발레리안 조린은 프라하에 도착했고 무장 세력과 경찰은 프라하를 지배했다. 비공산계 장관들이 붙잡혔고 공무원들은 쫓겨났으며 군대도 장악당했다.
