디플로도쿠스

디플로도쿠스(라틴어: Diplodocus)는 사무엘 웬델 윌리슨에 의해 1877년 화석이 발견된 쥐라기 후기에 살았던 디플로도쿠스과의 용각류 공룡의 한 속이다. 속명은 1878년에 오스니얼 찰스 마시에 의해 명명되었는데, 고대 그리스어에서 파생된 신라틴어 διπλόοςδοκός가 어원으로, "두 개의 대들보"라는 뜻이다. 이 언급에서 디플로도쿠스의 셰브론 뼈는 꼬리 아래에 위치해 있다. 이 뼈들은 처음부터 디플로도쿠스의 특이점으로 믿어져 왔다. 그러나, 이런 뼈는 다른 디플로도쿠스과 공룡이나, 디플로도쿠스과 외에도 마멘키사우루스 등에서도 발견되고 있다. 몸집은 아프리카 코끼리 4마리를 합쳐 놓은 것과 유사했으며 총 길이는 24~26m에 몸무게는 12~14.8t에 달했을 것으로 추정되지만 과거 세이스모사우루스(Seismosaurus)로 불렸던 디플로도쿠스 할로룸은 길이가 29m였다.

디플로도쿠스 할로룸

한때 세이스모사우루스라고 불리던 근연관계의 공룡은 이제 디플로도쿠스의 한 종인 디플로도쿠스 할로룸으로 재분류되었다. 그리고 육식공룡이 다가오면 70여 개의 뼈로 이루어진 꼬리를 휘둘러 상대를 쓰러뜨렸다. 이 꼬리는 굉장히 강력한 폭발음을 내었다고 추정하기도 한다. 화석은 주로 북아메리카에서 발견되었다.길이는 대략29m로 추정되고 몸무게는 23t으로 추정된다. 처음에는 39~52m에 100t으로 추정되었다.
