볏망가베이는 서아프리카 구세계 원숭이로 볏망가베이속(Lophocebus)에 속해 있다. 이들은 어두운 색깔의 피부와 자신의 얼굴 피부와 어울리는 눈꺼풀을 지니고 있으며, 머리 윗 부분에는 머리털로 된 볏이 있다. 망가베이의 또 다른 속인 흰눈꺼풀망가베이속(Cercocebus)은 한 때 매우 가까운 관계에 있다고 간주하여 하나의 속에 이 모든 종을 포함시킨 적이 있었다. 그러나 이제는 볏망가베이속(Lophocebus) 종들은 개코원숭이속(Papio) 종들과 좀 더 밀접한 관계에 있다고 이해하고 있고, 반면에 흰눈꺼풀망가베이속(Cercocebus) 종들은 맨드릴속과 더 밀접한 관계에 있다고 본다. 2006년에, 고지대망가베이는 볏망가베이속(Lophocebus)에서 새로운 속 키펀지속(Rungwecebus)으로 이동됨에 따라서 83년 만에 영장류의 새로운 속이 생겼다.
