Collapsible sidebar
편집안녕하세요, @Ykhwong: I noticed that you wrote a gadget that allows everyone to collapse the sidebar. It's fantastic! Also, I like how you approached to the logo change.
The Wikimedia Foundation Web team is working now on a project called Desktop Improvements. Among new functionalities, there's going to be a collapsible sidebar (you may take a look at the feedback by our users). So, congratulations! it seems that the functionality you introduced on this wiki will be deployed for many other wikis and users around the globe! :)
Now, in the context of this plan and your gadget, there are a few options:
- Korean Wikipedia may join the test wikis and have the feature deployed as soon as possible (see the Opting in and Release Plan),
- [this seems to be the recommended option] Korean Wikipedia may wait until this feature is default for most of the wikis and then remove your gadget,
- you may adjust your gadget to avoid conflicts with the new feature. WMF developers may help with that if it's difficult for you to make an exception. I think that eventually, when the Desktop Improvements have been deployed for a really large number of wikis, due to maintenance and UX consistency reasons, your gadget would be removed.
What do you think? We're open for discussion with you!
Normally, I'd write on your talk page, but I dont't have the permissions, that's why I'm inviting you to this discussion on my talk page.

- @SGrabarczuk (WMF): Hi, SGrabarczuk. Thanks for the information and feedback on the collapsible sidebar. We had a consensus to implement the feature to provide an option to hide redundant links and encourage people to focus on the pages that they read. Of course, we can abandon the feature given that the official gadget will be introduced. :) Besides hiding the sidebar, my other preference is to replace the existing sidebar with an upper menu that can hide submenu items but still does not require additional clicks to access them. For example, please try en:User:Ykhwong/common.css and hope you deliver the 'concept' to the developer team. Note that the CSS has not been revamped to be widely used for Wikipedia.
- Regarding the appearance, the Korean Wikipedia community has longed for an improved user interface including DiscussionTools. We had worked for a feature fairly similar to the DiscussionTools but stopped maintaining it because we noticed that the feature has been already officially under development. The option considered recommended (option no. 2) would be nice, but as many people want to test new beta features in the Korean community, I hope we join the test wikis so that the features can be quickly deployed and tested. (option no.1)
- Thank you. --ted (토론) 2020년 4월 10일 (금) 21:44 (KST)
- @SGrabarczuk (WMF): Sorry for the confusion. Above is just my opinion and does not represent the consensus of the community. It is also okay for me to go with the option No.2. Thanks. --ted (토론) 2020년 4월 10일 (금) 22:41 (KST)
I dare to advise about 'Desktop Improvements'
편집Excuse for my clumsy English hands;) Call me as Horo-jo(it means my nickname '호로조').
I'm interested in interface of Wikipedia and I'm studying to HTML, CSS and Lua to learn about its interface. These account for my belief designing sleek interface makes more incentive for Korean speaker to connect to Korean language Wikipedia.
Personally, I think that changing the interface by personal simple setting is not as effective as overall in a language Wikipedia, especially Korean Language wikipedia. I don't think that I support to bias about Asian people, including Korean, but there are difference between Asian and Caucasian in way of cognition:
- Caucasian see object individually, but Asian regard on context; In experiment when showed two group subject to a paint, which was drawn a laughing person in angry crowd, Caucasian thought that a person is 'happy' but Asian said that doesn't
- Asian have attention on texture, but Caucasian emphasize on form.
- Korean language Wikipedia should become more interactive; When there are Panda, Monkey and Bamboo, for reason Panda love Bamboo, I'ma bind Bamboo and Panda. In experiment, in contrast, Caucasian bind Panda and Monkey, Because they are mammal both.
Many Korean speaker take much time to adapt thread-type replying system alike in Reddit, you may feel difficult in Korean Website too. I don't only say about reply, but I would like to also advise about aside
list in left, Log in information list and unlimited Viewport size. there are many things as well as these that Korean user adjust Wikipedia. I think it would be better to use nav
collapsal menu. Thank you for reading about it. --호로조 (토론) 2020년 7월 9일 (목) 21:05 (KST)
