영어로는 'relating or belonging to or occurring in every-day life (매일의 일상의 삶에 관계된, 매일의 일상의 삶에 속한, 매일의 일상의 삶에서 일어나는)'를 뜻한다.[1][3]

    # The people of the world; this world; sentient beings 人間. The customs of the secular world; conventions 俗. [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge; source(s): Nakamura]

In bodhisattva path theory, it usually refers to persons who are at the stage of the ten faiths 十信, ten understandings 十解, or ten practices 十行, thus being contrasted with the term 'transmundane' 出世間, which refers to the world perceived by enlightened practitioners, such as bodhisattvas in the ten grounds 十地, and buddhas.
