야로슬라프 펠리칸

야로슬라프 펠리칸(Jaroslav Jan Pelikan, 1923년 12월 17일 - 2006년 5월 13일)은 기독교 역사학자 및 역사신학자다.

생애와 활동

1946년 미국 컨콜디아 신학교 신학사 학위B.D를, 시카고 대학교에서 박사학위Ph.D를 동시에 받은 뒤 밸파라이소 대학교, 컨콜디아 신학교, 시카고 대학교 등을 거쳐 로렌드 베인톤의 뒤를 이어 예일 대학교 신학대학원의 교회사 교수, 1972년에는 예일 대학교 역사학과 석좌교수Sterling Professor가 되었다. 1966년 미국 인문-과학 학술원 회원으로 선출되어 1994~1997년에는 의장으로 활동했으며 1993~1997년에는 대통령 산하 예술-인문학 위원회 자문위원으로, 1999~2001년에는 미국 정치-사회과학 학회 회장으로 활동했다. 40개가 넘는 대학교에서 명예 박사 학위를 받았으며 1992-3년에는 기포드 강연을 맡았고, 2005년에는 폴 리쾨르와 함께 미국 의회 도서관이 수여하는 존 W.클러지 상을 수상했다. 55권으로 이루어진 미국 영문판 『루터 저작선』Luther’s Works을 편집했으며 브리태니커 백과사전 종교 항목의 편집자로도 활동했다. 오랜 기간 루터교회 목사였고, 1998년 정교회로 옮긴 뒤 2006년 평신도로 세상을 떠났다. 크리스채너티 투데이 미국판 수석 편집자인 티모시 조지는 그의 죽음을 기리며 적었다. “‘위대한’이나 ‘최고’라는 표현은 누군가를 좋게 평하기 위해 너무나 자주 부적절하게, 느슨한 방식으로 쓰이곤 한다. 하지만 펠리칸의 경우 이 표현은 문자 그대로 진실이다.” 또한 로버트 루이스 윌켄은 말했다. “그는 그리스도교 사상이 위대한 사상가들, 오리게네스, 테르툴리아누스, 아우구스티누스, 토마스 아퀴나스와 같은 위대한 학자들과 수세기에 걸친 대화를 통해 태어났음을 가르쳐주었다. 대다수 학자들이 특정 시기에만 관심을 갖고 있을 때 그는 자유롭고도 대담하게 그리스도교 사상사 전체를 조망했다.”
