Watch the Throne은 미국의 힙합 가수 제이지와 카니예 웨스트의 콜라보레이션 음반이다. 이 음반은 로커펠라 레코드, 락 네이션, 데프 잼 레코딩스에서 2011년 8월 8일 발매되었다. 제이지의 The Dynasty: Roc La Familia음반에 카니예 웨스트가 프로듀서로 참여한 이후로, 둘은 많은 음반과 곡에서 작업을 하였으며, 발매 전 2011년 1월 11일 싱글 "H•A•M"과 7월 20일 "Otis"를 낸 뒤 이 음반은 2011년 8월 8일 발매되었다. 음반 수록곡들 중 많은 곡들의 프로듀싱에는 카니예 웨스트가 참여했으며, 이외에도 스위즈 비츠, RZA, 88 키스(88 Keys), 제프 배스커(Jeff Bhasker) 등 많은 프로듀서 진이 참여를 하였다.

이 음반은 발매 직후 빌보드 200 차트에서 1위를 기록하였고, 첫 주에 436,000장이 팔렸다. 이 음반은 2012년 그래미상 베스트 랩 앨범 부문에 노미네이트되었고, 이 음반의 수록곡인 "Otis"는 2012년 그래미상 베스트 랩 퍼포먼스 부문을 수상받았다. 이 음반은 미국 음반 산업 협회 (RIAA)에서 플래티넘을 기록하였다.

배경 편집

제이지와 카니예 웨스트와의 관계는 2000년 제이지의 The Dynasty: Roc La Familia 음반의 수록곡인 "This Can't Be Life"에 카니예 웨스트가 참여하면서 시작되었다.[1] 본격적인 둘의 작업은 2001년 발매된 The Blueprint에서부터 인데, 이 음반은 카니예 웨스트만의 독특한 스타일이 돋보였던 음반이었다. 그 후에도 둘은 많은 곡에서 같이 작업을 하여 관계를 발전시켰으며, 2004년 카니예 웨스트의 가수로써 첫번째 음반인 The College Dropout에서도 "Never Let Me Down"라는 곡에 제이지가 참여한다. 이외에도 T.I.와 릴 웨인과 같이 작업한 "Swagga Like Us", 리한나와 같이 작업한 "Run This Town", 릭 로스, 본 이베어, 니키 미나즈가 참여한 "Monster" 등 많은 곡에서 둘의 작업은 계속되었다.

2010년 10월 19일 카니예 웨스트는 자신과 제이지의 콜라보레이션 곡이 5개가 담긴 EP가 발표될 것이며, 이름은 Watch the Throne이 될것이라고 말하였다.[2] 후에 MTV를 통해 EP가 아닌 정규 음반으로 발매한다고 이야기하였다.

싱글 편집

2011년 1월 11일, 제이지와 카니예 웨스트의 첫번째 싱글인 "H•A•M"이 발매되었다. 렉스 루저(Lex Luger)가 프로듀싱 하였으며, 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 23위를 기록하였다.

2011년 7월 20일, 두번째 싱글인 "Otis"가 발매되었다. 이 노래는 미국의 가수 오티스 레딩의 노래 Try a Little Tenderness를 샘플링 하였으며, 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 12위를 기록하였다.

세번째 싱글 "Lift off"는 2011년 8월 23일 발매되었다. 미국의 팝 가수 비욘세가 피쳐링에 참여했으며, 대한민국 가온 차트 해외 차트에서 1위를 기록하였다.

2011년 9월 13일, 네번째 싱글인 "Niggas in Paris"가 발매되었다. 이 노래는 Watch the Throne의 수록곡 중 빌보드 핫 100차트 최고 기록을 가진 곡이며 순위는 5위이다.

이 외에도 5,6,7 번째 싱글인 "Why I Love You", "Gotta Have It", "No Church in the Wild"가 발매되었다.
