《The Dreaming》은 잉글랜드의 싱어송라이터 케이트 부시의 네 번째 정규 음반이다. 1982년 9월 13일 EMI 레코드를 통해 발매되었다.

  • 스매시 히츠의 데이비드 헵워스는 부시의 고양이 같은 목소리 때문에 패러디처럼 들릴 뻔 했지만, "전체적으로 순수하고 신중하게 작업했기 때문에 그러한 논란에서 벗어날 수 있었다"라고 호평하였다.[4] 레코드 미러의 서니 플레처는 "'록을 하는 여성'이라는 범주에 자신을 넣으려는 어떤 시도에도 저항한" 부시가 《The Dreaming》에서 그 어느 때보다 자신만의 매력을 발산하고 있다고 평가하였다.[1] 부시를 "시나 이스턴 팬들을 위한 새 조니 미첼"이라고 묘사한 가디언의 로빈 덴슬로는 "그녀가 가지고 있는 예술적 MOR 분야에서 훨씬 더 복잡한 스타일을 발전"시켰다고 좋은 반응을 보였지만, 기술적으로 매우 인상적인 느낌을 주었으나 그 모든 노력을 쏟아부을 가치가 있었는지에 대해서는 의문을 품었다.[5]

    • Kate Bush does provoke reaction. You can't wash her down with a glass of vermouth while posing on the patio. The world suddenly becomes black and white. She's not a walk-over or something to toss over your shoulder. I'm a blank sheet. Three hearings later, I feel sick. My stomach has turned. My first reaction was revulsion at the over-production. This is Ms Bush's utopia. She has realized her fantasy in the studio. It reminds me of how I felt after seeing All The Jazz where Bob Fosse indulges in a director's orgy. Here, Kate Bush unleashes every special effect available in sound engineering. It's a barrage with no real roughage. My second reaction was confusion. I felt swamped by Ms Bush's constant flight to the symbolic and esoteric. She takes pathos and rams it against a thick wall of sickly strings. I can't escape. Every song becomes an epic endeavor; a Ben Hur with shades of Don Givanni. My third reaction was shock. I read the lyric sheet. I'm sitting there under the impression that Ms Bush is floating on a terminal cloud nine when I stumble across some real thoughts. 'Dreaming' deals with the abuse and wiping out of the aborigines by the white man. Beneath the grandiose veneer lies a hard core. You would never dream it but there's more. 'Pull Out The Pin' is about the nobility of the Vietnamese in war. They put their silver Buddhas in their mouths before they went into action. It's a worthy theme but a horribly romantic treatment and you can her Bush sighing at the aesthetic beauty of it all. My fourth reaction is depression. After the positive ideas of the first side in 'Leave it Open', 'Sat in Your Lap' and 'There Goes A Tenner' comes a sentimental fog. The melodrama is hammed up to the hilt. Ms Bush falls easily into the maudlin mood with those prize tearjerkers 'All The Love' and 'Houdini'. On reflection after initial reactions, I can't help admiring her eccentric spirit and her voice. She has to be praised for bringing in Rolf Harris on his didgeridoo. Percy Edwards with his animal noise, an Irish jig band and a choirboy. Her sense of adventure is evidently intact but she crammed in too much. I'm drowning in a sea of vocal over-dubs. My taste buds have been over-stimulated. It took a year, five studios and five engineers to make this record. It shows.

    • The most impressive Fripp/Gabriel-style art-rock album of the postpunk refulgence makes lines like "I love life" and "Some say knowledge is something that you never have" say something. Part of the reason is that Bush is flaky enough to seek the higher plane in "a hired plane," although as you might expect the resulting analysis often crumbles under scrutiny. It also helps that the emotional range of her singing sometimes approaches its physical range, although when it doesn't you'd best duck. But the revelation is the dense, demanding music, which gets the folk exoticism of current art-rock fashion out of mandolins and uillean pipes and didgeridoos rather than clumsy polyrhythms, and goes for pop outreach with hooks rather than clumsy polyrhythms.
