쥐새과는 현존하는 쥐새목의 유일한 과이다. 쥐새목은 생쥐새목으로도 불린다. 꽁지가 길고 부리가 짧은 새로 깃벼슬을 가진다. 발가락 중 첫째발가락과 넷째발가락은 앞뒤 방향으로 향할 수 있다. 다리와 부리를 사용하여 생쥐와 같이 숲 사이를 돌아다닌다. 깃이 몸 전체에 나 있다. 붉은등생쥐새 등 6종이 알려져 있다.
