2003년의 APG II 분류 체계(1998년의 APG 분류 체계에서 변하지 않았다.)에서 외떡잎식물군에 할당되었고, 그 분류는 다음과 같다:

택사목은 전 세계적으로 분포하는 목으로 14개 과에 약 165개 속을 포함하고 있다. 과의 거의 대부분은 초본식물로 구성되어 있고, 일반적으로 수생 환경에서 발견된다.
